New Year's Day is the biggest event in Japan. There are many events during the Japanese New Year, such as "Osechi," "Otoshidama," and "Hatsumode," but what is most commonly talked about every New Year is the Japanese zodiac. The Japanese zodiac represents the year, which originated in China over 2,000 years ago. In Japan, it consists of 12 different animals. The order of animals representing the year is as below.

The year 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit. The kanji for the Japanese zodiac originally meant order in China, so they are different from those used in today's times. Also, the reason why there are 12 different Japanese zodiac signs is because of the orbital period of Jupiter which is 12 years. And was used to represent the year in China at that time. The order of animals is derived from the following Japanese folktale.

God said, "On New Year's morning, we will have a race among the animals and the animals in first through 12th place will take turns being the animal king." The mouse lied to the cat, saying that the deadline was the morning of January 2. The animals competed, and the first to arrive was the ox. However, there was a mouse on top of the ox, and the mouse was the first to greet God. Then the remaining 11 animals reached the finish line. This made the cat so angry and bitter that to this day cat continues to chases the mouse.

日本にほんでは正月しょうがつは最大さいだいのイベントです。日本にほんのお正月しょうがつには「おせち」「お年玉としだま」「初詣はつもうで」などたくさんのイベントがありますが、毎年まいとし新年しんねんになると話題わだいになるのが、今年ことしの干支えとです。干支えととは紀元きげん前ぜんの中国ちゅうごくで始はじまった暦こよみを表あらわすもので、日本にほんでは12種類しゅるいの動物どうぶつから成なり立たっています。暦こよみを表あらわす動物どうぶつの並ならび順じゅんは以下いかです。

2023年ねんは卯年うさぎどしです。干支えとを表あらわす漢字かんじはもともと中国ちゅうごくで順番じゅんばんを意味いみするものなので、通常時つうじょうじに使つかう漢字かんじとは異ことなります。また、干支えとが12種類しゅるいの理由りゆうは、当時とうじの中国ちゅうごくで年としを表あらわすのに使つかわれていた木星もくせいの公転こうてん周期しゅうきが12年ねんだからです。動物どうぶつの並ならび順じゅんは日本にほんの以下いかの昔話むかしばなしが由来ゆらいです。

神様かみさまが「正月しょうがつの朝あさ、動物どうぶつたちで競争きょうそうをして1位いから12位いまでの動物どうぶつを交代こうたいで動物どうぶつの大将たいしょうにする。」と手紙てがみを書かきました。ネズミは猫ねこに対たいして、1月がつ2日にちの朝あさが期限きげんだと嘘うそを言いいました。動物どうぶつたちは競争きょうそうをして、初はじめにたどり着ついたのが牛うしでした。しかし、牛うしの上うえにはネズミが乗のっており、ネズミが一番いちばん最初さいしょに神様かみさまに挨拶あいさつをします。続つづいて残のこりの11匹ぴきがゴールしました。そのため、猫ねこは怒おこって今いまでもネズミを追おいかけているのです。
