96% of Japanese elementary and junior high schools still use fax machines

A survey conducted by Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology has revealed that around 96% of public elementary and middle schools in the country still rely on FAX machines for their daily operations. This indicates a lack of progress in digitization efforts despite the government's push for reforms in teachers' work styles. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, some education boards still use FAX to send information about infection numbers, highlighting the inefficiency of these processes. Additionally, only 20% of schools have established systems to handle inquiries from parents via computers or smartphones outside of regular business hours, which means that almost 80% of schools lack such arrangements. The Ministry of Education plans to fully fund initiatives that promote the digitalization of schools, such as dispatching advisors, over the next three years.
