The most common surname in Japan is "Sato," but an astonishing calculation by Tohoku University has shown that in Japan, where married couples must take the same surname, all Japanese will have "Sato" as their surname in 500 years from now. Currently, 1.5% of the total population in Japan is "Sato-san," but the number of "Sato-san" will increase by 0.83% every year as women's last names are changed to "Sato" through marriage. According to the Tohoku University professor who presented the calculation results, he hopes that the results of this simulation will encourage the public to adopt a system of separate surnames for married couples.
