A fire broke out at the former residence of Mr. Kakuei Tanaka, the former Prime Minister of Japan.

A fire broke out at approximately 3:30 PM at the old Tanaka residence in Mejiro-dai, Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo. The fire department responded immediately to the scene and put out most of the flames. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported. Four people were present at the time of the fire, including Makiko Tanaka, the eldest daughter of Mr. Tanaka, and her husband, former Defense Minister Naoki Tanaka. Eyewitnesses reported seeing black smoke and large flames, and Makiko Tanaka was also seen outside. The Asahi Shimbun reported that the fire was caused by "Makiko Tanaka's forgotten burning incense."

田中たなか角栄かくえい氏しの元もと自宅じたくで火災かさいが発生はっせい。火事かじは東京とうきょう・文京区ぶんきょうく目白台めじろだいの旧きゅう田中たなか角栄かくえい邸ていで午後ごご3時じ半はんごろ発生はっせいし、消火しょうか活動かつどうが行おこなわれた。火ひはほぼ消けし止とめられ、けが人にんはなし。火災かさい当時とうじ、田中たなか角栄かくえい氏しの長女ちょうじょである真紀子まきこ氏しと夫おっとの田中直紀たなかなおき元もと防衛ぼうえい大臣だいじんを含ふくむ4人にんが敷地しきち内ないにいたが、無事ぶじだった。目撃者もくげきしゃによれば、黒くろい煙けむりと大おおきな炎ほのおが上あがり、真紀子まきこ氏しも外そとに出でてきたとのこと。朝日あさひ新聞しんぶんによると、出火しゅっか原因げんいんは「田中たなか真紀子まきこ氏しによる線香せんこうの消けし忘わすれ」だという。
