Tokyo's Birth Rate Falls Below 1 for the First Time
Japan's birth rate has reached a historic low, with the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare reporting the lowest figures for eight consecutive years. The current birth rate stands at 1.20. Last year, approximately 730,000 babies were born, marking the smallest number on record. In Tokyo, the birth rate has dropped to 0.99, falling below 1 for the first time ever.
No other country in the world has a birth rate below 1. According to the CIA, Taiwan holds the lowest rate globally at 1.09. Extremely low birth rates are predominantly found in Asia, with Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Japan having the lowest figures.
The current global average birth rate is around 2.3, with Africa showing significantly higher rates. Particularly, Niger had the world's highest birth rate last year at 6.73. High birth rates in developing countries are often due to children being seen as contributors to household income. In contrast, the high cost of raising and educating children in developed countries is frequently cited as a reason for lower birth rates.
