Japan's First Court Ruling Allows Same-Sex Marriages

In a case in which Japanese homosexuals living in Hokkaido sued the government, claiming that the lack of recognition of same-sex marriages violates the Constitution, the Sapporo High Court ruled for the first time that "same-sex marriages should be guaranteed to the same extent as opposite-sex marriages, as a free association between people. Ms. Kori Nakatani, the plaintiff, said, "I am thrilled that the court ruled the case unconstitutional, which I had hoped for. The trial may continue, so please continue to support us. Based on this ruling, there is a possibility that same-sex marriage will be recognized in Japan in the future.
