What is "Joya no Kane"?

The "Joya-no-Kane" (bell tolling) is a traditional Japanese New Year's Eve event. On New Year's Eve (December 31) in Japan, the bell is rung 108 times at shrines and temples. 108 is derived from Buddhist teachings and is said to be the number of human desires. In Buddhism, it is believed that 108 worldly desires are the cause of human suffering and that by listening to the bells ringing 108 times on New Year's Eve, one can be freed from these desires. 除夜じょやの鐘かねとは

除夜じょやの鐘かねは、日本にほんの年越としこしにおける伝統行事でんとうぎょうじです。日本にほんでは大晦日おおみそか（12月がつ31日にち）の夜よるになると、神社じんじゃやお寺てらでこの鐘かねが108回かい鳴ならされます。108回かいという数かずは仏教ぶっきょうの教おしえに由来ゆらいしており、人間にんげんの欲望よくぼうの数かずだと言いわれています。仏教ぶっきょうでは108の煩悩ぼんのうが人ひとを苦くるしめるとされ、除夜じょやの鐘かねを聴きくことでその煩悩ぼんのうから解放かいほうされると信しんじられています。日本にほんに来きた際さいは、新あたらしい年としを迎むかえる前まえにこの伝統行事でんとうぎょうじを体験たいけんしてみてください。
